Despite starting the morning off with precipitation, 1RCHA CO LCol Joe O’Donnell was impressed with the inaugural Ex TOUGH GUNNER. The event definitely tested the physical mettle of 1RCHA soldiers. “The primary goal of Ex TOUGH GUNNER is to foster teamwork, pushing individuals to collaborate closely while tackling obstacles and overcoming physical challenges,” says LCol O’Donnell. “This event serves as a test of participants’ fitness levels, pushing their endurance and strength to the limit. By embracing the demanding nature of Ex TOUGH GUNNER participants have the opportunity to build resilience and strengthen their mental and physical toughness.” Participants started their morning on the Base confidence course, before venturing out on seven, 14 or 21-kilometre ruck march on the Base’s walking trail. With the longer distances, the foursomes would stop at the obstacle course again, go through a different line of obstacles, then go back out on the walking trail. The top-three teams in each of the distances received special coins afterwards, with the winning team collecting $800 plus a special new trophy which will be awarded in June 2024 during the second annual Ex TOUGH GUNNER.
