Stag Special
With school out for the summer, and the warm weather upon us, the streets of CFB Shilo have become a lot busier.
With this in mind, Base MPs want to provide some summer driving tips which will make you, and everyone around you, safer.
Passing Marching Troops
One of the most common complaints heard by an MP is the speed at which cars pass marching troops.
Sometimes when you are in a car it is easy to pass marching troops quickly, not even realizing the speed you are traveling.
We suggest passing troops at no more than 20 km/h.
Additionally, if there is no oncoming traffic and you are on a divider free road, change into the opposite lane while passing.
Penalties for passing marching troops could include a speeding ticket, up to reckless driving charges.
Passing Cyclists
It is important that vehicle drivers and bicycle riders share the road.
When passing a bicycle in a car provide as much space as possible. Where space is limited consider lowering your speed.
Bicycle riders are reminded they must obey the rules of the road, and ensure they are visible when riding.
One of the most common concerns with bicycles is when they enter the roadway unexpectedly. Bicycle riders must shoulder check prior to moving into a roadway, too.
Remember, Base Standing Orders (BSO) say helmets are mandatory for all bicycle riders on CFB Shilo.
Summer lighting can give drivers a false impression of visibility on the roads.
Longer days lead to an elongated dusk period, and the dim lighting at dusk is a challenge for the human eye.
While the use of headlights is mandatory 30 minutes prior to dusk, it is critical drivers first and foremost actually obey the law, and secondly, consider turning headlights on as soon as daylight begins to diminish.
This important safety tip can be a real asset to making your vehicle more visible to others on the road.
School Zones — Residential Streets
Although school is out for the summer, schools are often still a gathering place for kids with playgrounds and fields.
Ensure you continue to exercise extra caution when driving through school zones.
Residential streets will also be much busier with pedestrian traffic. Adjust your speed according to the situation, and “use your road sense.”
Thanks for staying safe on the roads this summer.
