Retiring Executive Director of the Military Family Resource Centre, Willemien Van Lankvelt, received a commendation for her 17 years of dedication to the organization on Oct. 19.

Colonel Robbin Dove, Commander of 3rd Canadian Division Support Group, presented the honourable Commander 3 CDSG Command Team Coin of Excellence award at his first visit to CFB Shilo.

In a statement read at the ceremony, Van Lenkvelt was accoladed as essential to the growth of program delivery staff and for expanding the daycare on base.

“Willemien has led the organization through the trials and tribulations of COVID. They have worked hard to support the community through a number of community events and workshops, including gender-based violence education, International Women’s Day, MFS executive directors conference and Elkhorn family retreats.”

It was especially noted how she battled cancer this past year and briefly returned to work full-time in early spring to continue supporting the community.

“The last 17 years have taught me how strong and resilient the military community is and how that has shaped who I am,” Van Lankvelt told Shilo Stag News.

“Willie’s reliability, hard work and dedication reflect the highest standard of care for our military community,” the statement read.

In addition, guests heard how Van Lankvelt served on the board of directors of Career Connections for many years and provided consistency to the Military Family Resource Center through the transition of 14 board chairpersons.

“The last 17 years have taught me how strong the and resilient the military community is and how that has shaped who I am,” Van Lankvelt told Shilo Stag News.

“The MFRC is here to support those who sometimes need a bit of assistance. I am so proud of all the accomplishments over the years. But, I want to acknowledge that I couldn’t have done it without a strong team behind me,” she stated.

A farewell reception to honour the executive director’s achievements, contributions and lasting impact on the Shilo MFRC and community will be held Oct. 25, (Wednesday) 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the El Prado Club. All are welcome.
