Canadians who have served and continue to serve have made the “ultimate sacrifice in defence of the ideals and beliefs of this great country”, Lieutenant-Colonel David Cronk, Base Commander said at the CFB Shilo Remembrance Day commemorations.
More than 600 attendees packed the Multi-Purpose Training Facility (MPTF) on Nov. 11, leaving standing room only. An additional just less than one hundred participants viewed the ceremony on a live stream social media broadcast.
The hour-long ceremonies hosted multi-generational spectators who paid their respects to those who have fallen in the service of Canada as well as those serving today.
The Base Commander said in his address to the crowd that all were gathered to honour and remember the brave Canadians who served and continue to serve the nation in times of war, conflict and peace.
He said Canadians have fought alongside allies in many conflicts throughout our history, and many have given their lives so that we might enjoy freedom today.
“The hostilities of the First World War ceased on November 11, 1918, at 11:00 a.m., the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month.”
“We gather to remember,” LCol Cronk said.
“We also honour their family members – parents, siblings, children, and spouses – who have given up time with their loved ones in the name of our country.”
The base Commander encouraged everyone to take advantage of this time to reflect on the values our fore-bearers embodied in their sacrifice: selfless commitment, focused determination, uncompromising integrity, profound respect for the dignity of all people, and honour; values that mark the foundation of this great country and of those that serve CFB Shilo and across the Canadian Armed Forces.
“May we never forget.”
