Holiday help is available to Canadian Armed Forces members and families struggling with costs and expenses this season in the way of a new appreciation program, funded by Support Our Troops, Lieutenant (Navy) Padre Boghos Barbouri said on Nov. 29.

Registration for the redesigned holiday hamper program for CFB Shilo service members facing financial stressors during the season closes on Dec. 4 (Monday).

The Winter Gift Card Program has proven popular, the padre said, adding the use of gift cards this year opens up options to make the program more inclusive.

Previously, food baskets restricted the recipient to what was physically provided. The reimagined program allows freedom of choice for dietary, cultural and traditional needs.

“The gift cards encourage more personal choice and provide more agency in what they can buy,” he said.

Families with more than two children are entitled to $300 in grocery store gift cards, couples and families with one child may receive $200 and individuals will be gifted $100.

“The gift cards are not meant to change anyone’s economic status but are a token of appreciation,” Lt (N) Barbouri said, assuring there would be enough for everyone based on the initial estimations.

Once registrations close, the unit chaplains will discreetly distribute the gift cards so privacy and confidentiality can be respected. A CAF member or spouse must sign an acknowledgment that the gift has been received.

A friend or family member can nominate those who may benefit from the program, but anyone can also register themselves by contacting their unit chaplain, phoning 204 765 3000 ext. 3698 or emailing Boghos.Barbouri@forces.gc.ca
