Dragon slayers, behemoth roosters, trains and tropical flowers were all part of the inaugural CFB Shilo Community Council (SCC) cardboard toboggan fete on March 2.
More than forty people braved the frigid temperatures to warm up with family fun, hot chocolate and prizes at the bunny hill on Base to participate in the building, decorating and speed test of the most capable sleds.
Mayor of the SCC, Capt Eugene Sauve, said the event had been postponed from February due to a lack of snow and warmer weather. However, snow was moved by large grader equipment the morning of the match to make the perfect downhill dash.
The winter sleds were speed-tested by the mayor himself. With radar accuracy, the top rate of the descending driving drift is 22 kilometres per hour by the midnight marauder dragon sled.
Five categories had families vying for the top spot in most giant toboggan, which went to the Turpin family, and smallest toboggan, claimed by the Rogers family. Most Creative was awarded to the Stefanov family, and Most Durable saw the Rogers family win with a second entry.
Each division winner received a $25 gift card for their valiant efforts.
The Downes family was the major prize winner, holding the tournament trophy high with the caveat that they are now next year’s defending champs.
