The visiting Minnesota Warriors – St. Cloud took on the 1 RCHA Gunners hockey team in a 5-3 win over the home side in a game that saw a combined 73 shots on goal at J&G Holmes Arena in Brandon on July 14.

It’s a follow-up year that the American disabled military veteran non-profit organization has crossed the border to show its sporting prowess and friendly rivalry with the Canadians in the second annual Warriors Classic.

The chosen location for 2024 was CFB Shilo, where athletes teed off against each other at the Shilo Golf and Country Club on July 13, with the excitement of ice hockey the next day.

Civilian coach of the Minnesota Warriors, Neil Andruschak, praised both teams and said it was an incredible weekend which built strong bonds and relationships between the active personnel and the retired members.

Players for the Warriors have to have a disability rating through Veterans Affairs, Andruschak said.

“We’re a non-profit organization [helping Vets reintegrate] into society, whether they are struggling or not or are just looking for camaraderie – the Brotherhood, they call it.”

He said the Warriors are a great group of guys who miss the bond they had when they were active in the military.

“The locker room gives them that opportunity, and the therapies on the ice provide them opportunities to have each other’s backs.”

CFB Shilo was chosen this year to allow the visiting team to participate in activities around the Base, including a tour of the RCA Museum. Andruschak said the tournament is hoped to be held in Minnesota next year.

The golf tournament was a four-person scramble with mixed teams to foster fusion and create alliances. Each golf cart had one American and one Canadian Military to cement friendships and solidarity.

“The golf tournament showcased the amazing talent we have, and the hockey game was a testament to the determination and skill of both teams,” Andruschak said.

Master Warrant Officer Sébastien Perreault, CFB Shilo OPI for the event, said the competition was not just a battle for the top spot but also a testament to sportsmanship, as players cheered each other on and celebrated great shots together.

“The friendly rivalry was evident, but the focus remained on enjoying the game and fostering a sense of community,” he said.

“The golf and hockey weekend between the Minnesota Warriors – St. Cloud and the 1 RCHA Gunners will be remembered as a testament to the spirit of competition and camaraderie that transcends borders. It served as a reminder of the profound bond shared by athletes and soldiers, united in their pursuit of excellence and honour,” the MWO said.

“Despite the rivalry, the sportsmanship and respect between our teams were commendable. This weekend was about more than just winning; it was about bringing people together and celebrating our shared
love for these sports … As the weekend came to a close, fans departed with unforgettable memories and a shared sense of community pride. The Minnesota Warriors and the 1 RCHA Gunners proved that whether on
the golf course or the ice rink, their passion for the game and respect for each other make them true champions.”
