Members of the 2nd Battalion Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry (2PPCLI) were publicly recognized in the Manitoba Legislature on Oct. 29 and praised for their exceptional service to Canada for their contributions during the 2024 summer firefighting deployment to Jasper, Alberta.
Manitoba Military Special Envoy David Pankratz delivered a member’s statement in the afternoon session of the Manitoba Legislature thanking the unit for being part of the wildfire-fighting efforts after the community of Jasper was devastated by fire.
“The efforts of 2PPCLI exemplify the highest standards of service. Working closely with officers, first responders and government officials, they played a vital role in firefighting, evacuation support and protecting the community. Their commitment to service before self stands as a powerful example for us all. And in the face of unprecedented wildfire challenges, 2PPCLI mobilized with skill and a profound sense of purpose,” Pankratz said in the Legislature.
All members of the Assembly honoured the delegation from the unit in attendance in Winnipeg. From their seats in the Gallery, the Patricias had the opportunity to watch proceedings and hear the statement being read into the formal record.
“Manitoba is proud to be home to 2 PPCLI and the Canadian Armed Forces members who embody the best of our province and our country, always ready to answer the call.”
When the province of Alberta called for national assistance, there were 176 wildfires burning. This number didn’t account for two wildfires that threatened Jasper National Park.
2 PPCLI departed on July 26 and remained in the region for eight days. They were relieved by 41 Canadian Brigade Group (41 CBG) on Aug. 2.
CAF members deployed to Jasper and beyond to assist in wildfire relief deployed under the umbrella of Operation LENTUS. Operation LENTUS is the CAF’s umbrella term for domestic operations that are natural disasters.
