More than 430 pancake and sausage brunches stuffed hungry tummies at the inaugural All Ranks Holiday Party at CFB Shilo on November 23.

Major Melissa Marshall, president of the officer’s mess committee, said the day was a fantastic endeavour as the first combined ranks celebration for the festive season. Traditionally, the officers and NCOs join together for a family function, and the junior NCMs host their own party. This year was different, she said.

“Historically, there is always a holiday hoopla … with the upcoming deployments, we thought it would be a great effort to combine both activities together. It proved to be a great day with the number of families attending and the excitement of the children.”

The family-friendly activity day saw caregivers and children jump on the wagon for hayrides and a bonfire with marshmallows. Disney characters Olaf and Elsa were free with non-Frozen heartwarming hugs. At the same time, everyone could nibble on their freshly decorated cookies, sparkle with glitter tattoos, and have their faces painted with decorations.

A magician’s mystifying presentation with his emu sidekick demonstrated the fascination of the holiday season in a well-attended show.

Kids aged three years to 12 shopped for their loved ones at a specially designated $1.00 table hosted by Shilo Military Family Resource Centre. The day’s seasonal event was also supported by CFMWS and the Base fund.

Santa Claus, the big guy dressed in red, was ready with his “Ho Ho Hos” to welcome youngsters into the season’s spirit with a $25 gift and a photo to remind them of the holiday memories.

“It was really a great day for the families. The Base Commander was really happy with the turnout, so we will definitely look to sustain the activities for next year,” Marshall said.
