Indigenous Awareness Week (IAW) is an annual event celebrated nationally across the Department of National Defence (DND) and the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) during the third week of May. First observed in 1992, IAW has evolved into a meaningful opportunity to honour First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples through collaborative learning and knowledge sharing.

IAW is also an opportunity to recognize the significant contributions that Indigenous soldiers of the CAF, past and present, have made to the defence of Canada. Each year, IAW is celebrated under a new theme, which is chosen by the Defence Indigenous Advisory Team.

IAW aims to create respectful and inclusive spaces where all Defence Team (DT) members, Indigenous and non‑Indigenous alike, can deepen their understanding of Indigenous cultures and contribute to a collective effort toward reconciliation.

This themed week also serves as a starting point to encourage individuals, through their own actions, to learn more about and deepen their understanding of Indigenous realities, with the goal of collectively strengthening inclusion.

IAW 2026

The 2026 edition of IAW will take place from May 19 to 22 and will be held under the theme “Honouring the Past, Embracing the Future.” This theme highlights the importance of recognizing the past to better understand present‑day realities and shape a more inclusive future.

To mark the occasion, celebrations will be held across the DT, offering military members and civilians the opportunity to participate in a variety of activities, including traditional ceremonies (smudging, sweat lodge ceremonies, prayers, etc.), feasts, workshops, and more.

How to get involved?

Defence team members who wish to participate in IAW 2026 are encouraged to engage in ways that are meaningful to them. Whether it is learning more about Indigenous cultures, engaging in conversation with an Indigenous colleague, or taking part in IAW activities, each action helps foster positive and lasting change.

Defence team members are invited to contact their chain of command to learn more about the various ways to participate. A wide range of learning opportunities is also available through the Canada School of Public Service.
