The pride of accomplishment was felt by all in attendance, not just seen, across the youthful faces of the 1 RCHA Royal Canadian Army Cadets during the 8th Annual Ceremonial Review, held at CFB Shilo on May 28.
More than 20 awards and promotions were bestowed upon the corps of cadets, who have worked for years to attain high levels of achievement in physical and mental challenges.
Cadet Master Warrant Officer Andrew Weatherald received the year’s top honours with the Lord Strathcona Medal for the most deserving cadet, presented by Commanding Officer Captain Connie Wilson. He was also awarded the Base Commander’s Award for Top Cadet, presented by this year’s Reviewing Officer, 1RCHA Commander Lieutenant-Colonel Jordan Beatty.
Master of Ceremonies, Lieutenant Kennedy Wedderburn, explained that the Strathcona Foundation dates back to 1909.
“Lord Strathcona, then High Commissioner for Canada in London, England, wished to improve the physical and intellectual capabilities of youths by encouraging habits of self-discipline, good citizenship and patriotism. To this end, he created the foundation bearing his name,”
“In 1923, a medal was struck and awarded to the most deserving cadet of each corps. The medal is the highest award that can be granted to a cadet. The recipient was singled out amongst peers by an outstanding performance and a personal involvement in the community.”
During the ceremony, the 1RCHA cadet corps was praised for placing second in the zone marksmanship competitions, with a Team Prone score of 643, a Team Stand Score of 226 and an overall score of 869. Individual cadets were congratulated for their outstanding top placings of 1-6 in the Provincial Biathlon.

Training Levels Achieved were presented by Training Officer OCDT Arthur Blakely.
Green Star – Cdt Adriana Case, Gnr Justyce Case, Gnr Jayce Case, Cdt Nicholas Normand.
The top Green Star was awarded to Cdt N. Normand, presented by the Army Cadet League of Manitoba.
Red Star – Bdr Pinachahk Fontaine, Gnr Jace Pearson, Gnr Rian Pearson, Bdr Jonathan Shaw.
Top Red Star was presented by the Shilo and District Service Club to Gnr J. Pearson.
Silver Star – MBdr Tyren Carey, MBdr Ashley Price
Top Silver Star was presented to MBdr T. Carey by RCSU WO Patterson.
Gold Star – WO Chase Carey-Sparks
Top Gold Star was presented to WO Carey-Sparks by 1RCHA Commander, LCol Jordan Beatty.
Advanced Leadership Program – Sgt. Samantha Childerhose, WO Connor Forrestall, Sgt Elaine McDonald, MWO Alexandre Normand, MWO Andrew Weatherald.
The top Senior Cadet is Sgt Childerhose, and presented by 1 RCHA Regimental Sergeant Major CWO Sebastien Normand.
Peer’s Choice Award was received by MWO A. Weatherald and presented by MWO Carey.
The RCMP Award for Marksmanship Excellence is presented to one senior and one junior cadet. This year’s awards are presented by RCMP Sergeant Bryan Weatherald.
The award recipients for senior and junior are MWO Weatherald and Bdr Shaw, respectively.
The Sergeant Madison Award is presented to a female cadet who shows strength, dedication, courage and honour. This award was presented by 1 RCHA RSM CWO Normand and received by Sgt McDonald.
Promotions, presented by Capt Wilson, are as follows:
To the rank of Gunner – Cdt A. Case; Cdt N. Normand; To the rank of Sergeant – MBdr Carey, MBdr Price
Presented by the Army Cadet League, the Army Cadet Service Medal is awarded to cadets who have served four years in the Cadet Program. The 2025-2026 medal was presented to MWO Andrew Weatherald
For every year after, the cadets will receive a bar. This cadet is WO Connor Forestall
The 2025-2026 Royal Canadian Legion Cadet Medal of Excellence was presented by Zone Commander Fred Pritchard to MWO Normand for outstanding cadet service, citizenship, and comradeship.
