A significant proclamation from the Manitoba Government stating the province recognizes the first Sunday in June as Canadian Armed Forces Day was presented to CFB Shilo Base Commander Lieutenant-Colonel Jack Nguyen by Special Envoy to Military Affairs, David Pankratz, on June 8.
The Shilo commanding officer, LCol Nguyen, said that as the Canadian Army modernizes, he anticipates relations between the Base and the Province will develop and strengthen.
“We are grateful for the steadfast support Manitobans continue to show the Canadian Armed Forces, welcoming our members and their families with open arms as neighbours … we look ahead to deepening this relationship and advancing national security while contributing to economic growth and innovation in Manitoba and the Westman region.”
Pankratz said that as the military envoy, he has had the pleasure of meeting many members of the armed forces and seeing their courage and humility firsthand.
“They do not ask for recognition, but it is our duty to lift them up and show our immense gratitude for their service,” he said.
Sports, Culture, Heritage and Tourism Minister Nellie Kennedy said in a June 7 announcement that, to coincide with the federal government’s recognition of CAF Day, the Manitoba government is following suit by proclaiming the gratitude and respect Manitobans have for all who have served the country.
“We proclaim this day to recognize the important role the Canadian Armed Forces play in protecting democracy and freedom, as well as the sacrifices they make for our country. From serving in conflicts overseas to assisting with disaster relief at home, these brave service members represent the best of what it means to be Canadian,” Kennedy said.
The responsibilities of the CAF have grown to include providing humanitarian aid, international peacekeeping, maritime security, support for NATO missions and much more, the minister said. CAF symbolize Canada’s commitment to justice and peace internationally, as well as helping those in need domestically during emergencies, the media statement reads.
