More than 700 hamburgers and hot dogs sizzled on the grills, as attendees baked in the afternoon sun at the annual CFB Shilo Open House and Recreation Showcase on Aug. 27.
The outdoor party celebrated everything Shilo, from hobby clubs, community organziations, sports activities, emergency services, cadets and military equipment displays, while engaging members of the public, children, adults, and even some furry friends.
Shilo and Region Service Club provided the barbecue fare, with PSP Sports and Community Recreation providing the sweet after-dinner treats of mini donuts and candy floss.
Joanne Wells of the Shilo Region and Service Club said the club has been active since 1966 and is happy to assist with community events on Base three or four times a year.
“It feels good being a volunteer. It’s a beautiful day for it, and many people have come out to enjoy it.”
Activities such as mechanical bull riding, zip line, bounce castles, archery, and face painting were washed off by a massive soapy-bubble play area. Any toys and tots overly excited by all the fun were doctored up at the Teddy Bear Hospital.
Mom and yearly attendee Shannon Sexton said she loves bringing her family to the event as it captures community spirit and is an afternoon spent creating laughing memories.
“I love it. It’s great to get the kids out. I love all the Base events, and this is something that is dedicated to children and families and bringing the community together.”
