National Military Family Appreciation Day was celebrated at CFB Shilo with hot dogs and hamburgers fresh off the barbecue, as more than 350 attendees felt the love and support of those around them on Sept. 16.
The annual barbecue hosted by Shilo’s Military and Family Resource Centre (MFRC) celebrated its 8th year, recognizing the unwavering support of spouses, children, parents, siblings and loved ones, with 27 vendors and volunteers in attendance who stand behind members of the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) every day.
Deployment and Special Event Coordinator for MFRC, Kyla Westwood, said the day celebrated on the third Friday of September recognizes the significant challenges military families face as they support their serving member’s career.
“These sacrifices include relationships, employment opportunities, education, isolation, etc. It is important for Canadians to understand the challenge of keeping our country safe comes at a cost that goes beyond the serving member.”
Minister of National Defence David J. McGuinty stated on the day that families are the foundation of our lives, giving us strength, belonging, and a place to turn to through every challenge and every triumph.
“Military service asks a great deal not only of those who wear the uniform, but of the families who support them. Deployments mean time apart. Postings can mean a new home, a new job or a new school. Plans change, responsibilities shift, and families adapt, often quietly and without recognition.”
“Through it all, military families provide the stability, encouragement and support that help our members serve Canada. Their resilience strengthens our Canadian Armed Forces and the communities they call home,” McGuinty said in a written release on Sept. 18.
“Today, and every day, we recognize that contribution. To Canada’s military families, thank you for everything you do, for the sacrifices you make, and for the strength you bring to our Defence community and to our country.”
