DP1 candidates continue their infantry training on Base and in the RTA, with their graduation scheduled for Nov. 28. A trip to the rappel tower was on the agenda all morning as these future infantry soldiers moved up to a scenario where they will rappel from a hovering helicopter while fully kitted minus their weapons. The tower is designed to give the user the impression they are hanging from the chopper’s rail while taking non-verbal signals from air crew before sliding to the ground. Before starting, the candidates were provided with rappel lessons from two different heights, with instructors providing thorough instruction on the biomechanics of the rappel equipment, while keeping safety protocols in mind. Before enjoying their hay boxes for lunch, they then moved on to the last portion where they carried their full ruck sack while navigating the rappel rope, using the techniques they were taught, according to 3 Cdn Div TC C Coy Det Shilo OC Maj Melissa Marshall.
