Pandemic provided RCA Museum staff opportunity to enhance permanent exhibitions during closure

There have been some interesting additions to the RCA Museum when doors closed to public during Manitoba’s Code Red COVID-19 restrictions. The good news is the museum re-opened after restrictions were loosened for those wishing to explore military history and artifacts — including new acquisitions.

My family heard the next posting would be to Shilo, Manitoba, Canada — sounded like a fun place to go. New was always good, because every military child understood how this was the routine every few years. We had just been living in Germany, and that was an amazing place to be as a kid.

Imagine being posted to first Camp Shilo, and later CFB Shilo, on three occasions 11 years apart? That’s exactly what happened to Col Douglas Gunter during a military career which started in Fredericton, New Brunswick in October 1939 and ended with his retirement in Ottawa in August 1974.

There might not be a Tim Hortons in this quaint community 45-plus minutes west of CFB Shilo, but if you need an enormous apple fritter or fresh glazed donuts for your morning coffee — look no further than Minary Homestyle Bakery located on First Street. Moreover, in the past you would have had to keep an eye out for wandering peacocks in Souris’ downtown area, especially during the warmer months, as these majestic-looking birds used to navigate the sidewalks and roads.

When I worked with soldiers at 1RCHA, I often wondered how I found myself ministering to the men and women of the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) in this setting. I was born and raised in Nigeria — on the continent of Africa — but now proudly serve as a chaplain in the CAF. Nothing, aside from experience ever prepared me for this work within a multi-faith environment with men and women from such wide ranging diverse ethnic and religious backgrounds.

Tracing her family ancestry has led Ginger Lamoureux to discover her great-grandfather served in the Great War — specifically the No. 2 Construction Battalion. “I have a sister who was given up for adoption and we have found each other and reconnected over the last 12 years,” recalled Lamoureux, who is Health Promotion manager working out a CANEX office.

At the RCA Museum, we commonly receive requests for information on soldiers who trained at Camp Shilo during the Second World War. We rarely have data on recruits, but sometimes we do. In the case of Archie Lumsden, we have his photo album. Most recruits did not take photos of their experiences, making Archie’s album all the more unique.
