Soldier On softball tournament hits its out of the park with success

The inaugural Soldier On Softball tournament hosted by CFB Shilo saw six teams raise more than $1,580 on July 6 and 7 for the organization that supports ill or injured CAF members and Veterans.

Longtime Brandon teammates, the Beaver Bombz, hit it out of the park, stealing the winner’s title with a trophy and individual medals to commemorate the tournament victory.

Initiated in 2007, Soldier on has provided opportunities and resources through sport, recreation and creative activities to more than 12,000 CAF members or vets, said Chief Warrant Officer Eric LeClair, Regimental Sergeant Major for CFB Shilo and event organizer.

Drawing from his own experience when he was seriously injured on tour in Afghanistan he credits the organization in assisting with his recovery.

“I am a huge advocate of sport, and the Solider On organization is a program for ill or injured CAF members on the path to recovery. They are there to support you and help you adapt and overcome challenges,” the RSM said, adding that those trials can be physical, mental, visible, or non-visible.

“Soldier On is recognized for improving the quality of life of the ill and injured.”

CWO LeClair said the biggest success in the 36-game tournament was bringing together the Shilo and Brandon communities and advancing their knowledge of Soldier On.

He said the challenge in arranging the tournament was finding teams to play, as it was a coed tournament that required at least three females on each team.

Confident about the softball tournament’s positive results he is already planning a three-on-three basketball competition for the autumn.
