Part two of Strengthening the Forces (#STF) Defence Team self-care series

In the demanding world of the Canadian Armed Forces, where physical and mental challenges are great, self-care often gets sidelined. However, taking care of oneself is not just a luxury – it’s a necessity for facing the challenges of being a military member both at work and at home.

#DYK that healthy eating is one of the pillars of Self-Care? Self-care covers various aspects of health – physical, social, spiritual, cognitive and emotional – many of which are linked to what we eat. Science shows that our diet influences our well-being, cognition, mood and the possible development of many chronic conditions like heart disease, cancer, diabetes and obesity. It’s a fact – healthy eating patterns lead to longer, happier and healthier lives.

It’s important to know- when it comes to eating healthier, small changes can have a big impact over time. This could be something as simple as swapping soda or juices for water; choosing whole grain bread instead of refined; and choosing salad, cooked vegetables or fruit as a side dish instead of fries.

Eating well is also not about following trends or hyped-up “superfoods.” It is about embracing a healthy pattern of eating that includes vegetables, fruits, whole grains, proteins, and healthy fats. The benefits of healthy eating come from a mix of foods and nutrients working together, not just from single ingredients. Building connections through shared meals enhances the benefits of good nutrition. Whether grabbing a snack with a buddy or hosting a themed dinner with loved ones, eating together fosters social support and broadens our culinary experiences.

Practicing mindful eating takes self-care to another level. Focus on how you eat by paying attention to each bite, tuning into your hunger signals, and avoiding distractions. It can help you develop healthier relationships with food, creating a foundation for wellness in the future.

Food is like medicine: it has a big impact on our physical and mental health. Self-care is not a one-size-fits-all deal. It is about exploring what works for you. By taking steps to have a healthy diet, you can strengthen your mind-body connection and unleash your full potential.
