Weather conditions were ideal for the 17th annual BComd’s golf tournament held on the picturesque prairie 18-hole Shilo Country Club. When the prairie dust had settled, and organizer Jim MacKenzie tabulated the golf scores, the winning foursome, with a 10-under 62 on the par-72 course, featured Drayson Cowan, Chad Wallin, Grant Duncalfe and PSP Sr Mgr Craig Ethelston. The most honest foursome and winners of the tournament’s special trophy featured GSH staffers Melissa Green, Melissa Roberts, Julia Unger and Janna Dzubinski. This year’s event was quickly soldout, and MacKenzie was appreciative of all his sponsors, including adding KIA this year, with a KIA electric SUV on display. For the sixth year in a row, CANEX sponsored the hole-in-one hole, which again the cash prize went unclaimed. Windy conditions deterred golfers from having a good shot on winning taking aim from the 13th hold tee-box. MacKenzie acknowledged before the golfers hit the links the 18th annual tournament for incoming BComd LCol David Cronk will be his last because he plans to retire in August 2024.

It was a memorable day for two of the four Command Team participants during the 17th annual BComd’s golf tournament. BComd LCol Chris Wood and BRSM CWO Jeremy Abrahamse golfed for the last time on the Shilo Country Club prairie course, with both posted out after the CoC scheduled for June 26 at Canoe River Memorial Park. LCol Wood is heading back to Ottawa, while the BRSM’s CoA will see him trade his CWO rank in for a captain’s then it’s off to 3CDSG at Garrison Edmonton. There was lots of mentoring and teaching on the course, with adjutant Capt Amanda Fisher the recipient of many golf pointers when it came to club selection and swing approach. Also part of the foursome was COS Maj Scott Youngson, who observed CWO Abrahamse channeling his Happy Gilmore golfing skills throughout his tackling the SCC course. Moreover, his references to the Toronto Maple Leafs (besides his baseball cap) were numerous on each of the holes he faced, from the tee-box to the greens.

KIA and CANEX are two of the major sponsors BComd’s golf tournament organizer Jim MacKenzie assigned to look after certain holes. This was KIA’s first time being part of the 17th annual BComd’s golf tournament, while this was year six for CANEX and manager Melissa Kelly monitoring the golfers looking to ace the 13th hole.

Outgoing 11 Health CO Joel Bernier, who is posted to Garrison Petawawa this summer, introduced his replacement to CFB Shilo in advance of their June 20 CoC ceremony with an outing at the Shilo Country Club golf course. Incoming CO Maj Kirsten MacFayden joined the 11 Health foursome during the 17th annual BComd’s golf tournament. She’s moving to Manitoba from her current posting at Garrison Edmonton.

RPOU-W Det Shilo will take over the SCC for its own unit golf tournament June 23, so the command team put in a foursome to hone their drive, chip and putting skills in advance of being back on the links. Always a great way for team bonding, taking part in the 17th annual BComd’s golf tournament. Photos Jules Xavier/Shilo Stag
