Did you know Nov. 8 is National Indigenous Veterans’ Day, a day of remembrance and commemoration of the contributions of Indigenous military veterans. CFB Shilo hosted a mid-morning event at the consecrated permanent tipi on the south side of Base HQ, with DAAG military co-chair 2PPCLI’s KO Sgt Sylvain Leblanc opening with prayer, followed by civilian co-chair and accommodations IC Trish Harpe (now retired after a quarter century in the CAF and a Metis) giving a history of Indigenous soldiers involvement in Canada’s military. Wreaths will laid at the tipi by BComd LCol Chris Wood, 1RCHA CO LCol Joe O’Donnell and 2PPCLI A/CO Maj Chris Hartwick. LCol Wood rounded out the formal portion of the ceremony with his own speech which looked back on some of the Indigenous individuals who made an impact serving in the Canadian military. Even before Canada was a country, Indigenous peoples have fought to defend our country and our values. Photos Jules Xavier/Shilo Stag
