With the Shilo Stag celebrating its 75th anniversary in 2022, it was fun to go back into the newspaper’s archives and read stories from the past seven-plus decades. Besides the stories and photos, what was more interesting was looking at the advertising. To see the cost of groceries from a 1967 edition, when Canada was celebrating its centennial, and compare those same prices today — wow! Or to see how local stores advertised their shoes, or what a film camera cost in ’67, before the age of digital photography with the advent of 2000. Even the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) was introducing a new uniform that year, and a story appeared on the front page. You’ll notice a big difference in food costs from 1967, too, on the full page which a Brandon grocery store used to promote its products for the Saturday shopper — no Sunday shopping in 1967. Or how much a car cost? What do you think when you flashback to 1967, compared to 2023?
