Two major wins, including gold medals for the Shilo Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu team, with team members combined from 1 RCHA and 2 PPCLI, secured the top two spots out of 10 units at the 2024 Exercise STRONG CONTENDER in Edmonton from Jan. 15 to 19.
“It was a spectacular showcase of skill, strategy, and camaraderie enabling Shilo BJJ to emerge victorious in the grappling competition, not just once but twice, securing both first and second place,” Lieutenant-Colonel Joe O’Donnell stated.
He said the collaborative efforts of 1 RCHA and 2 PPCLI saw them “outshine the competition,” with the Patricia’s claiming the first place and the Guns securing a close second.
A rising star in the competition was Francis Elpa, a newcomer to Jiu Jitsu, who made an impressive debut by going undefeated and claiming a gold medal. This achievement speaks volumes about the hard rounds out at Shilo BJJ.
One standout moment was the remarkable performance of Keeghan Ypma, who fearlessly stepped up a weight class and still triumphed, bringing home the gold. This resilience and adaptability underscore the tenacity ingrained in CFB Shilo’s Jiu-Jitsu competitor.
“The synergy between these units was palpable as they cheered and coached each other through intense bouts, particularly when facing off against formidable opponents from the Edmonton units. The shared spirit of determination and encouragement elevated Shilo BJJ to new heights,” LCol O’Donnell said.
Beyond the medals and victories, the benefits of Jiu Jitsu were evident in the bonds formed and the cognitive skills honed by the participants. Often likened to human chess, Jiu-Jitsu requires strategic thinking, setting traps, and executing feints. For combat arms soldiers, these skills translate seamlessly, providing valuable tools for problem-solving and tactical prowess on the field.
Notably absent from the competition was the 2023 Ex STRONG CONTENDER grappling champion, Kevin Camara; as Shilo BJJ’s black belt and coach, he stepped aside to allow his team to demonstrate their prowess on the mats and focused on training and cornering the fighters from the two units.
“The absence of a key figure only served to emphasize the depth of talent within the Shilo BJJ community,” O’Donnell said.
Shilo BJJ’s triumph in the grappling competition showcased their physical prowess and highlighted the tight-knit community, adaptability, and strategic acumen fostered by this martial art. As CFB Shilo continues to make its mark, the future looks bright for Shilo BJJ and its dedicated competitors.
