Are you a military member? Do you drive to Brandon to buy medications like Tylenol and Advil from civilian stores like Shoppers Drug Mart?
If you answered yes to both of those questions, consider visiting the pharmacy at 11 CF Health Services Centre on this Base.
Did you know a large number of non-prescription/over-the-counter (OTC) medications are covered for military members as part of their drug benefit plan? This means military members can receive products like Tylenol and Advil from the Base pharmacy free of charge.
Base pharmacists can also assess for and prescribe medications to treat minor ailments. Minor ailments are short-term health conditions which can be managed with minimal treatment and/or self-care strategies.
Common minor ailments include, but not limited to: Athlete’s foot, cold sores, constipation, dandruff, headaches, heartburn, hemorrhoids, mild acne, mild eczema, mild joint/muscle pain, nasal congestion, nicotine dependence (eg cigarettes, chewing tobacco, vaping), plantar warts, seasonal allergies, and yeast infections.
Pharmacist prescribing for minor ailments is both safe and effective. A study conducted by Mansell et al surveyed 125 patients across 90 pharmacies in Saskatchewan who were prescribed a medicine by a pharmacist for a minor ailment.
Of the 125 patients, 101 (80.8 per cent) reported a significant improvement or complete resolution of their symptoms at the specified follow-up period of seven days or 30 days — depending on the condition. Only five (four per cent) of the 125 patients surveyed reported bothersome side effects.
So, if you’re a military member experiencing a minor ailment, stop by your Base pharmacy – the pharmacy team may be able to save you a trip to sick parade.
The pharmacy at 11 CF Health Services Centre is open Monday to Friday from 7:45 a.m. to 3 p.m. — closed for lunch from noon to 1 p.m.
The pharmacy can also be reached at 204-765-3000 ext 4178.
