Brandon area high-school students experienced a day in the life of their parents or caregivers at the 2024 Take Your Kids to Work Day event hosted at CFB Shilo.

More than 25 Grade 9 youths from Crocus Plains, Neelin, and Vincent Massey high schools attended the Base to participate in activities and learn about jobs in the Canadian Armed Forces.

CFB Shilo has supported the annual activity for more than 20 years as a host venue, opening its doors to students who do not have a base connection but are interested in learning more about the CAF and Base.

“Take Our Kids to Work (TOKTW) invites students to explore careers and employment by spending time in the workplace with a parent, caregiver or sponsor,” CFB Shilo Public Affairs Officer Lori Truscott said.

Mary Gemeda from Vincent Massey High School told Shilo Stag News that her perception and understanding of how much effort her parents put into employment has been expanded.

“It’s interesting to see how our parents put a lot of work into careers and supporting their families and how they kind of manage the whole day. We really don’t know how hard it is until we actually experience it and see what they are doing,” she said, adding that after spending the day on Base, she would consider a career in the military.

“This event supports career development education and future readiness. Each year, many schools and school divisions participate to allow young people to experience Manitoba’s work community,” Truscott said.
