The Virden Oil Capitals hockey team were hosted by CFB Shilo in Soldier for a Day on Sept. 11 in a team building exercise to create strong bonds between members and increase community spirit.

The MJHL players participated in the activities along side the Brandon Wheat Kings and Waywayseecappo Hockey teams from Sept. 11 to 13.

David Bielik, self described “old dog” and third year player of the Capitals said the 26 teams members started the day off with the obstacle course and got to “shoot some big guns.”

“We are here to start the year off right for some team bonding and to see what hard work is,” he said.

“The biggest factor is working together and working as a team. So, I think that’s going to be our motto for this year and we can build off that,” Bielik said.

Lieutenant Brian Poole of G3 Ops and Training Base and Headquarters said the events are a way to maintain community connections with neighbours. The experiences have been running for years and requests for the Soldier for a Day activity will be considered based on needs and capabilities.

“We are part of the community of Brandon. This is a good opportunity to create strong community relations between the area and the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF), specifically CFB Shilo,” he said.

The Canadian Armed Forces is a viable career option for athletes pursuing fitness, teamwork, camaraderie and sports. So, the functions are great for recruiting to show an element of army life.
