More than 40 golfers teed off in a wild and breezy shotgun start at the 2023 CFB Shilo Community Recreation League Wrap-Up golf tournament on Aug. 16. Despite high winds gusts during the afternoon event misdirecting many balls, much fun was had by all, Andy Depner, sports and recreation coordinator said.
“Shilo is pretty famous for having wind on the golf course,” Depner told Shilo Stag News. “People will talk about a normal Shilo day being a windy day … We haven’t had much wind this summer. This is one of the worst days we’ve had all year.”
“It was a solid year. We had lots of comings and goings, but we had a pretty solid core group that came to the league this year, so that’s exciting,” he said, adding it was terrific to see the sport growing.
“We had some pretty great scores and also have some golfers that really improved a lot.”
Kyle Timm and Bryce Seguin were named overall golf champions for the year, solidified by the presentation of a league trophy. Timm also won accolades with the tournament award for longest drive at 292.46 metres (319.8 yards) and won closest to the pin at 7.9 metres (26 ft.)
Top team honour for the tournament was awarded to Stu Smoley and Derrick Millard with the lowest score of 72. Second place went to the Timm/Seguin team with a score of 74.
“One of the things we like to do around here is the most honest score. The team that is willing to submit that scorecard is awesome about it,” Depner said, adding that notable honour went to Adam Harris and Stephanie Brisset.
Special mention went to Blake Grimeaux for pumping out a distance shot of 285.29 metres (312 yards).
The sports and recreation coordinator said the tournament closed out the season for the 15-week intersection golf league, which saw 60 to 90 military members and DND-associated civilians participate each week. The intersectional golf league has been a hole-in-one for players for more than 20 years.
