A Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Shilo Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) competitor brought home the win, clinching the Strangle Submission Series championship held in Winnipeg, on Aug. 26.

In a display of “sheer determination and courage,” Corporal Kevin Camara, a black belt from Shilo Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) Recreation Club and of 2 Battalion, Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry (2PPCLI), stepped onto the arena mats with just two weeks intensive training winning the $1,000 prize purse.

“He embraced a challenge that paralleled the spirit of the bison running into the storm – the mantra of Shilo BJJ,” Joe O’Donnell, president of the recreational club, said.

O’Donnell detailed this remarkable story unfolded when Camara took on the formidable Strangle Submission Series tournament with just two weeks of intensive training.

“The Strangle Submission Series is a platform nurturing the growth of BJJ and Submission Grappling in Manitoba. It embodies more than just a competition. It’s organized to promote awareness about the sport of Jiu-Jitsu and contribute to the community,” O’Donnell explained.

The event brought together competitors, enthusiasts and supporters in the name of this ancient martial art. With two evening matches lined up, Camara faced the challenge head-on, learning only on the night who he would face. His first adversary was the highly decorated submission artist, black belt Nathan Bernard.

O’Donnell quoted the words of Sun Tzu, “Strategy without tactics is the slowest route to victory. Tactics without strategy is the noise before defeat.”

O’Donnell said during the gruelling eight-minute bout, Camara executed a tactful game plan, knowing not to give an inch to his opponent and displaying an intelligent balance of tactics and strategy that culminated in a decision victory.

“His mastery over takedowns, relentless pressure and control underscored his triumph.”

The semifinals saw Camara matched against Andrija Pavlic, a highly accomplished grappler and experienced Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fighter.
The stakes were high as both contenders battled for supremacy in a match that pitted a current member of 2 PPCLI against a former member. The intense 10-minute duel showcased the skills and resilience of both competitors. Camara’s determination, refined technique and calculated decision-making propelled him to victory.

“Camara’s preparation, though very condensed, was focused, evident on the mats that evening. Having devoted two weeks to intensive training with the Shilo BJJ Club, a Shilo Recreation Club, his dedication and commitment laid the foundation for his impressive performance,” O’Donnell said.

All profits from the event were dedicated to the Manitoba Dream Factory, a charity dedicated to making dreams come true for children in the province who are battling life-threatening illnesses.

“In the heart of adversity, Cpl. Kevin Camara exemplified the indomitable spirit of a soldier, embracing challenges into the storm,” the club president said. “His victory in the Strangle Submission Series not only adds to his personal achievements but also stands as a testament to the strength, determination and skill of the individuals who proudly serve in the Canadian Armed Forces.”

As the dust settles on this remarkable feat, discussions about a rematch between Camara and Pavlic are already underway. The anticipation for the Shilo Submission Showdown, scheduled for Nov. 4 at Building L25, is building. Tickets for the event are now available on Eventbrite, offering the opportunity to witness Shilo BJJ’s “finest grappling talents” competing against fierce opponents from across Manitoba.

“Stay connected with Shilo BJJ on Instagram and Facebook (@shilobjj) to receive updates on this event and other exciting developments within the world of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu,” O’Donnell advised.
