Teams for the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF)National Men’s Hockey Championship hit the ice at CFB Shilo on March 4 in a delayed start after inclement weather hindered travel arrangements and play schedules.

Opening ceremonies were pushed forward 24 hours from Monday to Tuesday to allow teams to arrive from opposite ends of the country, Atlantic, Quebec, Ontario and Canada West divisions, amidst winter blizzard warnings at the Manitoba Base.

On Monday afternoon, Match one saw the Halifax Mariners face off against Valcartier Lions with a game-ending score of 10-2 for the Lions. Lions Dominic Beausoliel jersey 12 and Mariners jersey 49 Anton Manson were awarded game MVPs.

The Mariners returned to dominate the ice again the following day after opening ceremonies at the CFB Shilo Gunner Arena, beating the Edmonton Warriors with an 8-4 game win.

The action-packed game saw the puck flying all over the ice and through the air. Within two minutes of the start, a Mariners player sitting on the bench was hit in the head by the uncontrolled flying projectile and saved by his helmet with no injuries reported.

Taking the first goal, “home” team Mariners, dressed in yellow away colours, led with one minute left in the first period. Their second goal came at 14.5 minutes left in the second.

The Warriors quickly showed a short-lived edge, leading the game 3-2 with 4.20 left in the second.

The home team fought back quickly, tying the feisty game 3-3 at the third-period seven-minute mark, with one minute later, a goal taken by the Warriors increasing the score to 4-3.

In quick succession, the East Coast team scored goals four, five, six and seven, securing the game-winning eighth goal with 40 seconds left in the game.

Both number 19s of their respective teams, Mariners Owen Osborne and Warriors Seamus Maguire, were awarded Most Valuable Team Players in the round-robin game two match of the CAF Mens National Hockey Championship.
Semi-finals are scheduled for March 7 at 13:30 and 18:00, with the bronze medal final at 8:30 a.m. and gold at13:30 on March 8, followed by award presentation at 16:00.
