Brandon Fire Chief Terry Parlow was awarded the resulting penalty of the 3-4 hockey game loss between the Badges Firefighters and CFB Shilo team in an epic ice blaze, on March 19.
Parlow lost the friendly wager on his team’s ice dominance to Base Commander Lieutenant-Colonel David Cronk when CFB Shilo took the game 4-3 in overtime. Despite a valiant effort by the Badges players to remain shoulder to shoulder with the soldiers, Parlow’s penance is to get out his bucket and sponge to wash a military vehicle—which can be large in size.
“Last night’s hockey game between Brandon Fire and Emergency Services (BFES) and CFB Shilo was an excellent opportunity to not only play hockey but also build on our department’s strong connection to our Canadian Military,” Parlow told Shilo Stag News.
“Although I am not as thrilled about having to clean one of CFB Shilo’s military vehicles as a result of the bet we lost to LCol Cronk – It was well worth it,” Parlow said, adding he is looking forward to many more community-building activities.
Nineteen players from across the three CFB Shilo Divisions, playing in red jerseys faced off against the Brandon Fire and Emergency Services team adorned in blue Jets jerseys, with skill tests and challenges throughout the game evening with the Forces team under the coaching of Corporal Alex Moodie.
Shilo scored the first goal early in the game after the first puck dropped with the Badges evening up the score 1-1 just six minutes later. The puck was passed back and forth into both team’s goals during the game, ending in an overtime time tie-breaker.
Event organizer Andy Depner, Shilo sports and recreation coordinator said the game was fantastic.
“Brandon Fire and Emergency Services (BFES) brought 18 players and coaches all together on a bus including the fire chief who was the head coach.”
“Rob Hutchings and Cpl Anthony Schick were our officials. Warrant Officer Sean Cawdell was our time keeper/ score keeper and radar gun operator.”
That radar gun came in handy for BFES player Josh Blondeau’s shot at a speed of 140 km/h, which was the hardest shot during the skills competition.
Shilo showed their grit by claiming the fastest team and winning the relay race, which included a highlight of the two teams’ goalies racing each other.
