More than 4,000 people honoured Remembrance Day at CFB Shilo and in the city of Brandon at two commemoration services in which Military personnel participated, on Nov. 11.
CFB Shilo saw more than 600 attendees for its Base service, while members from 1 RCHA partnered as the Guard at Assiniboine Credit Union Place in Brandon, where a crowd of more than 3,500 watched the Royal Canadian Legion-hosted events.
Brandon Mayor Jeff Fawcett told Shilo Stag News the ceremonies always hold deep significance to Brandon because of its strong relationship with the Military in many aspects around the area.
“I do find with the proximity between CFB Shilo and Brandon and with all of the history we have around here, with the Base, [Commonwealth Air Training Plan Museum], and old military training grounds, there is always a deeper, heartfelt connection for our community.”
He said he sees the historic message of sacrifice being learned and carried forward by today’s youth.
“The number of children that are involved in all our different community groups — it’s a big deal and it is appreciated.”
“It is a reminder because of where we are in the country with our friends and neighbours inside the city, who are currently in the Military [the message of continuing to honour our Veterans] is present all the time, so it’s good to take a designated time to reflect and remember.”
