Just less than 500 civilians and public servants work every day at Canadian Armed Forces Base (CFB) Shilo, alongside CAF members, by supporting those in uniform. CFB Shilo honoured its public servants with a lunchtime barbecue on June 18 to recognize their efforts during National Public Service Week.
More than 500 hamburgers and hot dogs were served up to civilian employees by CFB Shilo Base Command team to recognize the efforts of these employees.
The week is an opportunity to recognize “dedicated public servants who serve Canada every day,” Minister of National Defence David McGuinty said in a media release, June 15.
“… public service carries a unique responsibility. Every day, you work alongside members of the Canadian Armed Forces in support of a mission larger than any one individual. Together, you help defend Canada, protect our interests, and uphold the values that define us as a nation.”
“Every capability delivered, every project advanced, every decision informed, and every operation supported reflects the dedication and professionalism that you bring to your work. The strength of Canada’s defence institution depends not only on the equipment we field or the operations we undertake, but on the talent, judgment, and commitment of the people who make those efforts possible,” the Minister stated.
National Public Service Week (NPSW) has been recognized since 1992, following the passage of the National Public Service Week: Serving Canadians Better Act. It is honoured the third week of June each year, this year being June 14 to 20.
Its objective is to “recognize the value of the services rendered by federal public service employees” and to “acknowledge the contribution of federal public service employees to the federal administration.”
Public service week was designed to promote pride in and recognition of the public service of Canada by providing internal recognition and by raising Canadians’ awareness of the excellence of the public service,” the Canada.ca website states.
McGuinty acknowledged that public service is not always easy, given the demands of excellence, resilience, sound judgment, and an unwavering commitment to the public good.
“Time and again, you meet those expectations with professionalism, integrity, and purpose.”
He said these employees are required to navigate complexity, embrace change, and deliver results in an increasingly challenging world.
“Public service is ultimately an act of trust. Canadians may never know every challenge you solve, every problem you prevent, or every success you help make possible. But they benefit from your work every day.”
“You are helping build the capabilities that keep Canadians safe. You are strengthening Canada’s position as a trusted Ally and reliable partner. You are ensuring that the Canadian Armed Forces have the tools, support, and resources they need to succeed wherever they serve,” the Minister of Defence stated.
“Through your dedication, you help ensure that Canada remains secure, resilient, and ready to meet whatever lies ahead. For that, and for all that you do, you have my deepest respect and gratitude.
It is an honour to serve alongside you as we strengthen our Defence Team, safeguard our country, and build a stronger Canada for generations to come.”
