Did you know ammunition used by soldiers in the Great War was manufactured in Brandon? Manitoba Engines Ltd Foundry was located at 803 Assiniboine Ave., where the company manufactured 18-pound and Howitzer projectiles. The 18-pound rounds made in the city can be identified by the “ME” cypher stamped into them. The 26th Field Brandon RCA/XII Manitoba Dragoons Museum has two 18-pound rounds in its collection — both were donated. Artifacts continue to roll in everyday at the museum.
Temporary exhibit focused on Canada’s Peacekeepers — RCA Museum

Have you had a chance to explore the RCA Museum’s in-house temporary exhibit In the Service of Peace: Canada’s Peacekeepers. Unveiled last fall, senior curator Jonathan Ferguson created the exhibition with the help his curators and summer students. In the exhibit, Ferguson covered Canadian peacekeeping from the 1950s to the present, from classic peacekeeping missions in the Middle East to the Balkans.

Artifact labelling helps museum visitors understand meaning of what’s on display — like Izzy dolls

Artifact labelling helps visitors to understand museum artifacts. In many cases, without a clear storyline or narrative, a visitor cannot determine the meaning or value of an artifact. In our current Canadian peacekeeping exhibit, curators display three pocket-sized dolls — Izzy dolls — measuring approximately 15 centimetres, which require a written description to explain their significance.
