Like a bison running toward the storm, five members of Shilo Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) headed east March 18 to Steinbach for the Revelation Submission-only grappling tournament.

This highly anticipated BJJ tournament saw 22 clubs from across Manitoba and neighbouring provinces competing, but one new club garnered a lot of attention as a team to keep an eye on — Shilo BJJ, which is a relatively new club that has been gaining traction at CFB Shilo, led by head coach Kevin Camara.

Theis club has been putting in the hard work and dedication necessary to excel in this highly competitive sport and their efforts in training and practice paid off at the Steinbach tournament.

Out of 22 clubs, Shilo BJJ finished third-place overall, an impressive feat for a club which is still in its early stages. And the individual performances of their competitors were just as remarkable. Shilo BJJ won eight gold medals, a clear indication of their skill and dedication to the sport.

The team at Shilo BJJ couldn’t be happier with their performance at the tournament. Head coach Camara said, “We’re doing something right” as he reflected on the tournament on the ride back to the Base with his teammates.

But their success doesn’t end there. Four members of the Shilo BJJ team will be competing in the upcoming Brandon Bouts April 1 in Brandon. This event is being organized by WAMMA Brandon, which also has strong ties to Shilo BJJ, as many members train at both dojos and have been promoted by head instructor Black Belt Chris Kading. Brandon Bouts is another opportunity for Shilo BJJ to showcase their skills and compete against some of the best in the sport.

The performance of Shilo BJJ at the Steinbach tournament officially put the Westman BJJ scene on notice. The club’s discipline, fighting spirit, dedication to this martial art and their willingness to put in the hard work necessary to succeed has clearly paid off.

Jiu Jitsu fans will be eagerly watching the Brandon Bouts to see how Shilo BJJ performs. But win or lose, one thing is for sure: this club has already made a name for itself, and the future looks bright.
