Carberry vs Shilo Sentinels U7 hockey — It was a hive of activity at Gunner Arena, with Sentinels hosting a five-team tournament. The local team was on the ice at 11:15 a.m. to open their tournament, drawing Carberry as an opponent. Each team played two games, with one official handling the traffic and dropping the puck to start a game with a rugby-style scrum opening faceoff. No. 5 Millie Laarakkers was noticeable on the ice, the only player wearing a pink helmet. She garnered the ‘player-of-the-game’ honours, with her keepsake prize handed out by Shilo minor hockey association VP Maj Chris Hartwick. She was a standout on the ice, whether playing defence, attacking the opposition net with a shot, or even taking a break to defend her team’s net. Lots of hustle from Millie, as she challenged her opponents for the puck. Unlike older players, the U7 age group plays on half-ice, with scaled down nets, with no goaltenders. Adding a netminder at the U9 age category provides young Hockey Manitoba players with exposure to goaltending, in case that’s what they want to be going forward as you move up to U11, and full ice play.
