Four hundred and fifty-seven people attended the 43rd annual Terry Fox Run at CFB Shilo, including more than 200 schoolchildren from the Base’s two schools, on Sept. 13.

CFB Shilo Base Commander, Lieutenant-Colonel David Cronk opened the  run with a good-spirited recollection of watching Terry Fox’s journey across Canada on television

“All of the funds gathered today are for cancer research and tied to the amazing story of Terry Fox,” he said.

“I am a certain vintage. I remember as a young fellow watching Terry Fox do his Marathon of Hope on T.V. – not that I’m dating myself. But, it was a nervy young fellow thinking it was a super inspirational story. Watching a young man battle cancer and trying to raise funds for research – well, it definitely affects almost everyone in the crowd today.”

Andy Depner, sports and recreation coordinator, said it was the first time in five years the schools had participated in the Base hosted fundraiser for cancer research. More than $850 was raised to go to the cause.

Adults and military members had the opportunity to complete a 5 or 10-kilometre run, while the kids could complete two laps of the running track or a 2.5 km run.

Donations can still be made toward the fundraiser, by being dropped off at the GSH front desk.
