Starting April 1, province modernizing angling licences benefits active military members, veterans

As part of ongoing efforts to reduce red tape, the provincial government is implementing modernized, streamlined angling regulations effective April 1, announced Natural Resources and Northern Development Minister Greg Nesbitt.

Four-day RCA Reunion is back — starts June 29

After a five-year hiatus because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the RCA Reunion is happening this summer. The four-day event will start June 29, and participants can also take part in Base Canada Day festivities. “Believe it or not, five years have passed since the last Regimental reunion,” offered 2023 reunion committee president Maj Lindsay Jackson. “So, it is that time once again to gather together for the 2023 Royal Canadian Artillery [RCA] Reunion at the Home Station of The Royal Regiment of Canadian Artillery, CFB Shilo. The aim is to renew close friendships and relive the fine and lasting memories we have forged over our many years of service to Canada and the RCA.”

Maj Jürgen Miranda is ready for his next military mission, this time deploying across the Atlantic Ocean to prepare Ukrainian Army recruits to face invading Russians on the snow-covered battlefield. It’s a mission the 16-year CAF veteran is looking forward to once Op UNIFIER-UK pre-deployment training concludes at CFB Shilo, and the more than 100 Patricias augmented by Reservists bus to 17 Wing Winnipeg for their flight overseas.
Lt-Gov Anita Neville makes inaugural visit to CFB Shilo, says she would enjoy return visit

Manitoba’s Lt-Gov Anita Neville made her inaugural visit to CFB Shilo, with a stop at Base HQ to visit with BComd LCol Chris Wood and his Command Team. She also stopped by 2PPCLI and 1RCHA before making her way to CFB Shilo’s MFRC, where she met with staff.

“Let’s get the word out!” That five word quote comes from Royal Regiment of Canadian Artillery Regimental Major Maj Lindsay Jackson, who is co-chair for the four-day RCA Reunion being held at CFB Shilo starting June 29. “It’s officially a GO for 2023,” she announced. “Put [the dates] in your calendars and more details will come soon.”

Ballistic protection important for soldiers — learning from Afghan War experience

Between 2001 and 2014, more than 40,000 Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) members were deployed to Afghanistan.
During the war, 158 soldiers were killed during this mission, and thousands more were wounded. And the feedback from the front lines will be very important. Simon Ouellet, who specializes in personal protection and survivability, acknowledged CFB Valcartier-bsed Defence Research and Development Canada, has been working on feedback since the beginning of the conflict, in order to create a database of soldiers injured and killed in combat. This was done in order to have a complete picture on the dangers encountered by the CAF on the ground.
M114/39 howitzer moved to new prominent location at artillery gun park

We recently moved our M114/39 howitzer to a new prominent location in our artillery gun park.
Visitors now have an excellent view of the howitzer’s profile. We also call the M114/39 the Gerald Bull gun. A gifted Canadian engineer, Gerald Bull developed long-range artillery making the M114/39 possible. Later, Bull went to Iraq and designed a super-gun for Saddam Hussein. An unknown assailant assassinated Bull in March 1990.
