This Sunday the Winnipeg Blue Bombers are looking to three-peat and garner another Grey Cup, playing in Regina, SK. The Nov. 20 tilt features opponent Toronto Argos. There’s a historical connection to the game, via the RCA Museum. Before the CFL’s Grey Cup, Governor General Earl Grey commissioned several other cups. The RCA Museum has one of these cups on display. History tells us the Governor General commissioned an English jewellery company to make this cup, and was so unimpressed by the final product, he decided to have another much larger one made, which eventually became the CFL’s Grey Cup as we know it today. Senior curator Jonathan Ferguson says the Governor General’s cup became the Canadian Artillery Association Governor General’s prize for general efficiency garrison artillery — coast defence — won by Number 4 Company 1st Regiment CA. The actual Grey Cup was on the Base earlier this year, on display at CANEX with Blue Bomber Brandon Alexander. Fan of the CFL were allowed to pose with the trophy alongside Alexander, plus Ferguson brought the museum’s trophy which showed the size difference.
