The snow was flying almost as fast as the downhill torpedo-like cardboard constructions at the 2026 Annual Toboggan Race on March 7, hosted by the CFB Shilo Community Council.
More than 50 cardboard crafters, racers and spectators braved the winter chill to warm up with hot chocolate, cookies and hot dogs, fuelling the energy of the sprinting sleds.
“It was the largest turnout yet,” said Ward One representative Jen McDonald of the Shilo Community Council.
“We are incredibly grateful to have a community and the council that comes together to organize events like this. We have lots of stuff going on around the Base, “ Lieutenant-Colonel J.P. Nguyen said, praising the enthusiasm of participants and the organizing team.
Volunteer judges from the council inspected and awarded certificates and gift cards for various composition categories like largest, fastest, teenyweeny, and most creative homemade snow transportation.
Many family-friendly events take place on base to encourage community spirit and well-being, the Base Commander said.
“I was just at the free skate that happens almost every weekend. We’ve got the toboggans here today, supported by the Base fund. We’ve got activities coming up in the future like Lobster Fest. There are great activities for families and individuals across the base. We are so happy to have people come out and join us for these activities,” he said.
