A familiar golfer has won another Canada West regional golf championships at the par-72 Shilo Country Club.
Leading the men’s division since opening day of the three-day tournament, visiting here from his posting to Colorado Springs, Maj Cam Lowdon recorded a 10-stroke victory over runner-up WO Paul Swansburg of 4 Wing Cold Lake, Alberta.
Maj Lowdon, who was drenched by water from a recycle garbage can by a friend after he learned of the first-place finish, shot a 76, 73 and another 76 in the final round for a three-day total of 225.
WO Swansburg moved up from third-place thanks to his 78 on day three, which combined with his earlier rounds of 78 and 79, gave him 235, one shot better than 2PPCLI’s Cpl Paul Dummitt, who finished in third following his 82 in the final round.
He had scored 76 and 78 in earlier rounds to remain in second behind Maj Lowdon after two days of tournament action.
A/SLt Darcy McHugh from CFB Esquimalt was consistent in his four rounds, recording scores of 80, 81 and 81 to finish in fourth with a three-day total of 242.
Meanwhile, CFB Shilo finished first overall among men’s teams thanks to combined rounds of 426, 428 and 419, finishing with a three-day total of 1,273.
Going into the final day of play, 4 Wing Cold Lake was just 10 strokes back of CFB Shilo. The difference on the final day was a 446 hurt the team’s overall total, with the local golfers recording a 419.
4 Wing Cold Lake’s three-day total was 1,310. 19 Wing Comox finished third with a three-day total of 1,344 of the six teams in contention for the title.
Low score from three days of golfing came on the windy opening day of golf, when Maj Lowdon fired a one-over 73.
Among the top-10 men’s golfers after the tournament concluded were two CFB Shilo teammates — WO JC Houle from 1RCHA shot an 84, 80 and 84 to finish sixth overall with a combined score of 248.
In seventh was CFB Shilo teammate Cpl Reid Gobin, who fired an 85, 83 and 81 for a three-day total of 249.
CFB Shilo’s Maj Stuart Smoley recorded rounds of 91, 97 and 91 to complete his tournament with a score of 279.
Top female golfer on the 18-hole Shilo Country Club course was CFB Suffield’s adjutant Capt TJ Rogalsky, who carded a 95 on the opening day of action, followed this up with a 92, then scored a 101.
Runner-up was 17 Wing Winnipeg’s Maj Manivone Morrison, who finished with a 314 after firing rounds of 105, 106 and 103.
CFB Shilo’s Cpl Caralyn Bohm was seventh with a three-day round of 406, two shots behind Capt Catherine Mason from CFB Esquimalt, who carded 143, 136 and 125 for a 404 total.
Men’s and women’s teams will represent Canada West at CAF golf nationals from Aug. 27 to Sept. 1 at CFB Borden, Ont.
The top golfers who qualified to represent the region at nationals are: Capt Rogalsky – CFB Suffield; Maj Morrison – 17 Wing Winnipeg; Capt Caitlin Clapp – 15 Wing Moose Jaw; Maj Lowdon – Colorado Springs; WO Swansburg – 4 Wing Cold Lake; Cpl Dummitt – CFB Shilo; A/SLt McHugh – CFB Esquimalt; WO JC Houle – CFB Shilo; and Cpl Gobin – CFB Shilo.

Distracted by another golfer, Canada West regional golf championship men’s winner Maj Cameron Lowdon on OUTCAN — flew in from Colorado Springs — received a cold shower from a golfing buddy after he completed the three-day competition held at the Shilo Country Club. Maj Lowdon recorded a three-round 225 on the par-72 course, finishing 10 shots better than runner-up WO Paul Swansburg from 4 Wing Cold Lake.
