Precocious daughter helps mom sign 11 Health Change of Command scroll

Margot MacFadyen made her mom’s 11 Health Change of Command ceremony a memorable moment at CFB Shilo’s Officers’ Mess. “I never thought I would have a kid on my lap signing a Change of Command scroll,” said new 11 Health CO Maj Kirsten MacFadyen, when she spoke to the CoC ceremony goers moments after her precocious pre-schooler sat on her lap while signing three scrolls alongside outgoing CO Maj Joel Bernier and reviewing officer Capt (N) Nicholas Gauthier, Comd of 1 Health Services Group at Garrison Edmonton.

“I was looking around for Rosalind Lebel when I heard the name called,” offered a shocked Rozy Lebel during a rare outdoor CFB Shilo awards and honours parade. A “lifer” working on this Base like her colleague mess manager Patsy Marion, Lebel finally realized it was her name emcee and Base adjutant Capt Amanda Fisher had called out over the PA system at the Leslie parade square.

Patrick Grundle reached out to the Shilo Stag asking if there would be coverage of his son Gnr Nicholas Grundle’s return home from Latvia. It happened mid-morning June 14, when two buses finally arrived out front of 1RCHA’s unit on Base. There were a dozen family members and friends awaiting the arrival, whereas, Patrick Grundle had to rely on photos relayed to him via Stag FB messenger.

It was a hive of activity inside and outside of L25, with steak and lobster being prepared on the barbecue and boilers for the annual BComd Lobsterfest. More than 800 were in attendance at a community event on Base which has been postponed the past few years because of the COVID pandemic.

It is an opportunity to recognize, celebrate, and learn more about the countless contributions Two-Spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, and additional sexually and gender-diverse identities (2SLGBTQI+) Canadians have made to the Department of National Defence (DND), the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF), and to the country.
Shilo’s Amazing Race features blind golf, razor shaves — Range Rovers cover the course in 66 minutes

It took the winners one hour, six minutes to complete the 2023 edition of Shilo’s Amazing Race, with eight teams having to navigate the on-Base pitstops where participants had to complete their challenges, before moving on with another clue plus a dinosaur sticker on their passport.

Four tipis are now ready for use in Indigenous education programs and events at CFB Shilo. The tipis were acquired in late 2022 from Corinne and John Belanger from Cree Star Gifts, but had to receive its initial teachings before they could be used for future events and activities.
